Why Silesia and Lesser Poland, specifically

A rainwater harvesting system only works as well as the rainfall data and site knowledge behind it. Working across two neighbouring regions lets us stay close to both.

Rainfall is local, not national

Poland's annual precipitation varies noticeably between regions, and even within a single voivodeship. The mountainous fringe of Lesser Poland, around the Beskids and foothills near Kraków, generally receives more rainfall across the year than the flatter parts of Upper Silesia further north. That difference matters directly for tank sizing: a roof of identical size in Zakopane's foothills and one in central Katowice will realistically fill a tank at different rates.

We reference historical precipitation records published by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) for the relevant municipality, rather than applying a single national average. It is not a perfect prediction of any given year, since weather varies, but it gives a grounded starting point for sizing a tank that behaves sensibly across an average season and during drier spells.

Housing stock shapes the design

Silesia has a dense concentration of single-family homes built from the 1960s through to the present, many with pitched clay tile or concrete tile roofs and relatively compact plots due to the region's mining and industrial history. Lesser Poland mixes similar suburban housing with more rural and semi-rural properties, often with larger gardens and outbuildings.

That contrast affects which tank format makes more sense on a given plot. Compact urban gardens in Katowice or Gliwice often favour underground tanks so the limited outdoor space stays usable. Rural properties around Tarnów or Chrzanów sometimes have room for an above-ground tank against a barn or garage wall, which can simplify installation.

Groundwater pressure and water use patterns

Parts of southern Poland have seen periods of lower groundwater levels and, in some municipalities, seasonal restrictions on garden watering with mains supply during dry summer stretches. This has made rainwater harvesting a more visible option for households wanting a supplementary source for irrigation, separate from municipal water. We do not present this as solving water scarcity on its own; it is one practical way to reduce reliance on treated mains water for uses that do not require drinking-water quality.

Toilet flushing is typically one of the larger single uses of treated water inside a home. Directing harvested rainwater to that circuit, alongside garden irrigation, is often where a system delivers the most day-to-day practical value for a household.

A note on regulation

Rainwater harvesting and its connection to household plumbing sits within the framework of Poland's Water Law (Prawo wodne) and relevant local building regulations, particularly where groundwork affects existing drainage arrangements or where a tank sits close to a boundary. Requirements can vary between municipalities within Silesia and Lesser Poland.
